01 Feb Road mode vs railway: how to support combined freight transport in Friuli Venezia Giulia region?

In Friuli Venezia Giulia region there is a demand for the freight transport with origin or destination in Friuli which uses the road mode over medium-long distances (over 6 million tons per year). The demand differs significantly by sector and transit corridor. This is one of the results of the study on the demand estimation which can potentially switch from the road to the railway mode produced by Starter for the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region. This study highlights the importance of pushing mode transfer policies towards combined transport in order to enhance environmental sustainability.
The study scenarios highlight the opportunity to achieve important results in terms of potential modal shift only with significant changes in the cost of road transport (+ 20%). Depending on elasticity, we can go from over 400,000 tons to over 520,000, corresponding respectively to over 34,000 and almost 44,000 vehicles a year. In this shift, a fundamental role is played both by the differentiation by commodity supply chain and by the corridor used.
Another relevant result of the study is the quantification of the potential demand for road transport of transit goods of regional interest. Over 9 million tons a year are calculated, of which only a part today crosses the region. This information highlights the possible growth perspectives of the regional logistics and, once again, highlights how North-East of Italy can qualify as a fundamental logistics platform, at the centre of the Mediterranean basin, and heart between continental Europe, Africa and Asia.
